In the second part of the tetralogy humans enter the story: the fates of the gods and humans begin to interweave and influence each other. The siblings Siegmund and Sieglinde, separated long ago, are brought together. The gods are consumed by a dispute over whether to protect Siegmund in his struggle with Sieglinde\'s husband, and in the end their interference brings about the death of both combatants. The dead Siegmund is taken away by the Valkyries - daughters of one of the gods whose task is to take fallen heroes to the gods\' castle where they will serve as protectors. One of the Valkyries, Brünnhilde, informs Sieglinde that she will bear a son fathered by Siegmund.
